Micro-needling & Acupuncture: A Holistic Approach to Hairloss

MicroNeedling has been proven to help with with hair loss from:

  • Postpartum hair loss (hormonal hair loss)

  • Androgenic alopecia (patterned baldness due to genetics) Receding Hair loss due to excess androgens (hormone).

    • caused by a combination of genetic and or hormonal factors

    • increased levels of the androgen hormone- dihydrotestorone (DHT) in the scalp is a key factor. DHT causes hair follicles to thin leading to hair loss.

  • Alopecia areata (badness due to autoimmune issues)

  • Radiation and Chemotherapy

  • Side effects of Anti-depressants

The typical hair follicle grows for about 2-6 years then goes into a resting phase for several months before falling out and starting over. The excess androgen (hormones) helps control the hair cycle and when there is too much it can shorten the growth period and thin the hair strands. It will also effect how the hair follicle sheds and grows back.

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), hair loss is usually caused by nutrient deficiency (Qi & Blood) and or inflammation. By combining acupuncture, micro-needling, herbal medicine and stem-cell serum, we can help with regulating your hormones and bring nourishment to the hair follicle and slow down hair loss as well as regenerate hair follicles.

How does acupuncture, micro-needling and red light therapy help with hair loss?

Acupuncture and Micro-needling helps stimulate blood flow and brings nutrients to the hair follicle. Acupuncture can improve blood flow to scalp, reduce inflammation, regulate hormones, modulate the immune system, and stimulate hair follicle growth. Microneedling creates stimulate collagen growth as well as providing an effective delivery system for topical products to be absorbed. Combining these two modalities with with red light therapy and herbs, we can help nourish the scalp and body to slow down hair loss. Our herbal medicine is specifically formulated to nourish the scalp and stimulate blood flow.

At home, you may continue to use the hair growth spray as well massage rosemary oil into the scalp to maximize treatment outcome.

Some more studies to read if you would like further details:

Rosemary oil compared to minoxidil:

  1. Using only rosemary oil was found to produce results similar or better than Minoxidil (Rogaine): this study found that rosemary oil is as effective as 2% minoxidil in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6388561/

Red light therapy:

  1. Red Light therapy on 44 male participants with androgentic alopecia resulted in significant hair counts: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24078483/

  2. Red light therapy has been shown to alter the hair cyle stages. Low level 650nm red light promoted the proliferation of human hair follicles.

Acupuncture and Microneedling for Hair loss:

  1. This study found that scalp acupuncture was as effective as minoxidil 2% in increasing hair count and improving hair density in men with androgenetic alopecia. The study also found that scalp acupuncture was safe and well-tolerated. Efficacy of acupuncture for androgenetic alopecia: a systematic review and meta-analysis (Journal of Hair Research, 2022)

  2. This meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials found that scalp acupuncture was more effective than sham acupuncture in increasing hair count and improving hair density in people with androgenetic alopecia. Efficacy of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in Alopecia: A Narrative Review (2022)

  3. This study found that the combination of microneedling with triamcinolone acetonide was effective in treating alopecia areata. This suggests that reducing inflammation can help to promote hair growth and improve the overall appearance of the scalp. Alopecia Areata—Successful Outcome with Microneedling and Triamcinolone Acetonide

  4. Image below is from this study that found the combination of microneedling with Minoxidil gained about 91.4 hair vs Minoxidil only with 22.2 hairs. Our treatment will use traditional Chinese herbal medicine as well as red light therapy to maximize hair growth.
