How to prepare for a micro-needling session: Before & Aftercare

Pre-Treatment Skincare Regimen

For Acutane users - must wait 3-6 months to do microneedling

1-2 Weeks before:

  • Regular cleansing and moisturizing: Keep your skin clean and hydrated, but avoid harsh scrubs or abrasive products that might irritate your skin.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect your skin from the sun, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Excessive sun exposure can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation post-microneedling.

  • Discontinue use of retinoids: Retinoid creams or serums should be discontinued at least one week before your micro-needling session to prevent skin sensitivity.

  • Must wait at least 2-3 weeks after any kind of injections or procedures to the face to do micro-needling.

2-3 Days before:

  • Discontinue NSID or any blood thinner medications (check with your doctor first if you are not sure).

  • If there are any new cold sores consider rescheduling.

  • Keep exfoliation to a minimum - avoid if possible

On the day of your treatment:

  • Come with a clean face: Do not apply makeup or any skincare products on the day of your session.

  • Wear a hat after treatment and for the rest of the week.

  • Inform your practitioner of any changes: If you've had any changes in your health, or have started taking any new medications, be sure to inform your practitioner before the procedure begins.

Aftercare

Right After:

  • You will be red after the procedure, you may use natural aloe vera to help reduce redness and inflammation. You can refrigerate the aloe for a more soothing effect, test a small area before putting aloe on your skin, although it is natural, some people are allergic or sensitive to it.

  • Use hyaluronic acid or other serums provided if you feel dry throughout the day and before bed.

  • NO MAKEUP or harsh chemicals - your skin is still very sensitive from the treatment and these may irritate the skin

  • If you must wash your face, do so with WATER ONLY tonight, tomorrow you can use a gentle cleaner.

  • NO EXERCISE - sweat may irritate the skin and cause breakouts. You can return to exercise after 3 days.

  • NO SUN - UV rays damages the skin, while the skin is regenerating we want to avoid any kind of radiation. Wear a hat. Use mineral sunscreen for a week after treatment.

  • Please note: For Acne patients: sometimes micro-needling can cause you to have an acne flareup before it clears up, this is your skin releasing toxins from the deeper layers similar to what would happen from taking acne medication. Use gentle cleaner and avoid touching breakouts.

2-3 days After:

  • You may return to exercise after 3 days

  • You may use makeup after 2 days

  • Use gentle cleaner - as clean as possible

  • Back to your regular skin care routine

4 weeks later:

  • You can do another microneedling session, your skin has completely healed.
